What a deep question? It is certainly not an easy question to answer. I am interested and very motivated to address this question. I think we all need to challenge our inner selves. If we don’t who will?
Well, that’s why I’m putting my thoughts out there so that maybe I can make a tiny difference in someone’s life.
I know that when something is whispering in my ear, you know when you have that sensation, that feeling chances are many people are experiencing the same thoughts. I do wonder at times just how different we are? I heard once we all have a twin somewhere in the world. If we are physically duplicated, what about mentally? That would have to be another post altogether. Back to the challenge of answering just who exactly we think we are.
If someone asked me what do I do, I could easily reply I teach. Yes, I am a teacher, but then again I feel like I am so much more. The reality is most of my time is spent as a teacher. I am sure we all can be defined by the jobs we have but is that really who we are?
When I first started teaching, I used all the methodologies I learned to enable me to teach my students. My job was to help them progress to the next level. Just like everyone, I went to work, and at the end of the day, I came home and maybe had some news about what happened at work.
As you get older life starts challenging you and you find yourself searching for a purpose. This feeling begins to weigh on you and in time your job starts feeling like a weight on your shoulders. We do have to go to work right? Not all of us have the advantage of changing jobs just like that. Bills need to be paid, and life takes over.
But, here is the point I am making if we can’t change jobs and we not able to resign and do something different, become something different. Is it not possible to find a deeper purpose to who we are in these jobs? This is deep and at such an intense level, because I am more than just a teacher.
I believe we all have a purpose to serve every day, no matter where you work or what you do. When we discover this purpose, we will know who we are.
I thought teaching was to teach students so that they can move onto another grade until one of my students hugged me and told me his mum was in the hospital and when I meet with parents and I see the concern on their faces when I tell them that their child is struggling in class or the gratitude and appreciation I receive when they children have achieved high marks in an exam. These moments that I am part of has made me realize that I can make a difference in so many lives. Maybe my purpose is not only to teach but to use my profession to make a difference in a child or parents life.
I am sure a specific teacher comes to mind when we think of our school days. Sadly, I can’t recall any teacher of mine. I now know why. They didn’t bring that value into my life that I needed as a kid. They were merely there to teach and leave at the end of the school day. Let us find that purpose in our jobs so that we know exactly who we are. I believe that no matter what you are doing every day you can make a difference. Let’s not take ourselves for granted; there is a reason why you are in the job you are in. If you can’t discover that reason, then it is time to think about who you are?
