What is your relationship with food?
Did you ever think or consider that what we eat says a lot about how we feel towards food?
Honestly, I never thought much about the food I was buying. My grocery cart included fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and chicken. The extra groceries that I purchased were to spice up the menu. I was a young and clueless mother. My knowledge of food was based on my childhood experience. I read books on nutrition and health but caring for a tiny baby and being a full-time university student left me with so much time. When my kids were little, treats and preservative foods seem to find their way into the cart. Having a luxury cupboard was a must; it gave us the option to enjoy a bag of chips, candy bars, or chocolate when we wanted. Does this all sound familiar?
With age comes wisdom, and now I have become more aware of my dietary needs and wants. My awareness has created a desire for food education. To me, an apple is no longer just an apple. Is this feeling the same for you too? Do you find yourself googling the benefits of eating something?
My hair, nails, and skin depend on my newly founded knowledge!
A few weeks ago, I bought a watermelon. My twelve-year-old son made it very clear to me that he doesn’t like watermelon. So I didn’t force him to eat it. I am also a lot more patient and understanding as a mother; getting older brings me a different thinking process, well, at least for me.
It’s scorching during the UAE summers, and sinking your teeth into a sweet, juicy slice of watermelon is refreshing. But, when my appetite was satisfied, I still had so many pieces left. I hate wasting and throwing good food away. So, I decided to make watermelon juice. I never thought of juicing a watermelon, and the results were delicious!
I took the tray of watermelon and left it in the ice freezer. When I made the juice, it turned into an ice-blended delicious, thirst-quenching drink. I was so impressed with my new summer creation; I just need to share it with you. The best part of all was that my son loves it, and he forgot about disliking the fruit!
I learned that drinking watermelon juice has so many nutritional benefits, and it’s so easy and affordable to make.
Watermelon & Strawberry Ice -Blended Juice– (Preparation time 10 min)
6 cubes frozen watermelon slices
4 frozen strawberries
½ lemon or 1 small lime
2 tsp brown or white sugar (You can omit the sugar if you want the juice to be very healthy)
2 cups of water- For thicker juice, add less water.
Method
Blend all the ingredients together. This blends well in a NutriBullet or similar type of blender.
Optional – Add frozen mint leaves to the juice to give it a different taste.
TIP– Did you know that there are so many varieties of watermelons? I usually purchase Crimson sweet because it’s delicious and is the most popular in the supermarkets.
What are the benefits of drinking and eating watermelons?
Firstly, it will help you stay hydrated and control sugar cravings. So why not indulge in natural sugars to remedy your sweet tooth?
Watermelon contains antioxidants that help remove free radicals. But, did you know that when too many free radicals stay in our bodies, it can result in cell damage, affecting our overall health? I urge you to please consult a professional physician when it comes to dietary needs. The information on my website is based on personal experience only.
Research suggests that it can lower blood pressure. But, do we ever stop and think when we are drinking soda drinks? How does a can of soda get digested, and what harm is it causing you? This would be a healthier option.
Watermelon contains Vitamin C, which the body needs to produce Collagen. So I guess a glass once in a while might help improve your skin and keep you looking youthful.
TIP– People with Diabetes and Allergies should always consult a dietitian or professional doctor when consuming and drinking foods. Sometimes eating whole/ sliced fruit is better than juicing it. The correct information can better support any dietary choices.
There is so much information online to help us understand the nutritional information regarding fruits and vegetables.
When you develop a positive and educational relationship with food, it can be life-changing.
My trips to the supermarkets have turned into a growth experience. I am now seeing fruits and vegetables in a new light.
Mixing, icing, blending, and juicing have become part of my weekly routine. In addition, I am discovering new ways to use fruits and vegetables.
The next time you fill your cart with grocery items, think about your purchases’ nutritional benefits and how it affects your nervous system.
Have a refreshing summer!
