It’s that time of year when we only have a few weeks left before the New Year kicks in.
Everyone is thinking of what goals they want to achieve for 2019 — this may be fairly simple for some and others like myself so complicated.
If finding a new job or new path is what you want to accomplish for yourself in 2019, you have stumbled on the right page.
For years people have asked me what it is like teaching in the UAE.
- How do I get a teaching job in the UAE?
- What are the salaries packages?
- What are the students and the schools like?
- Do I enjoy working and living in the UAE?
I have been on several phones calls trying to ease people’s curiosity about teaching abroad.
For that same reason, I have included the Expat life for all those who wish to live in the United Arab Emirates or have plans for an upcoming vacation.
How do I get a teaching job in the UAE?
Firstly, you need a good Curriculum Vitae (CV). I am always shocked that people want to work abroad, but don’t have a CV to send. If you still planning to make one. Do IT! You can’t look for a job without one.
ALWAYS HAVE YOUR RESUME READY! WHEN AN OPPORTUNITY COMES KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR, BE READY!
I have used several job searches over the years, but I highly recommend contacting an agency that specializes in only teaching positions.
What you need is for your resume to get noticed and the visa process to start taking place as fast as possible so you can start packing your bags and boarding the plane.
Teachanywhere
I recommend teachanywhere; they will give you’re the information and support you need to find a teaching position abroad.
When you visit the website the feeling of excitement will hit you instantly. There are so many teaching posts listed for so many countries. The decision on where to teach can be somewhat overwhelming.
This is where I come in, I have been teaching in Abu Dhabi for ten years, from private to public schools.
I also have two kids who have attended schools in the private sector. My knowledge regarding the education system is quite extensive. If you still need support or advice. Please email me or comment at the bottom of this post.
Submit your CV
You have to register all your details before submitting your CV.
Now that your information is in the system, you will receive an email from teachanywhere should you be considered for a position?
You got the teaching position
If you were selected for a position in the UAE, you would receive a call from one of the lovely representatives from teachanywhere. They will inform you of the interview details and location.
Interviews usually take place at specific locations all around the world. If you are lucky and it is in the city you live, make sure you are available on the date they give you. If the interview is not held in the place you reside, the agency will work with you to make sure you do get interviewed. This might require an online interview or whatever they suggest is easy for them.
The Interview
The most nerve-wracking part of securing a job. Don’t be nervous. Interviewers want to employ teachers who are experienced, knowledgeable and confident.
The usually ask some of the following questions
Tell us about yourself– Be specific and confident when answering. Avoid long irrelevant details. No one has time to listen to your entire life story, even if it is exciting. Try to use words that make you look good as a teacher and a person. Practice this response in the mirror. It helps take the nerves away when you prepared.
Teaching experience – They usually want to get an idea of your teaching background. No one analyses your CV. They depending on you to help them decide to hire you. You are your CV. Speak honestly and use your experience to guide you. I recommend using a brief example to clarify a point you made.
Opinions– They might ask your views on many educational topics, such as Data, Classroom differentiation, Classroom management, Learning environment, Discipline, etc. You should be able to answer this with ease, experience is the best teacher, but to be on the safe side, practice your answers.
Why do you want to work abroad? – This can be a tough question. Usually this type of question gives interviewers an idea of who you are going to be when you arrive. Remember they have interviewed hundreds or thousands of potential teachers. They have probably heard it all. I would suggest referring to your curiosity about learning a new culture etc. You can teachanywhere, but why have you chosen the UAE, Abu Dhabi? You can talk about the schools and wanting to teach international students, but try not to sound rehearsed. I suggest reading about the country and having an idea of the place.
Over the years, I have been surprised that people have applied for teaching posts in Abu Dhabi and don’t know how big Abu Dhabi is. Please don’t assume Abu Dhabi is only the city you see online.
Where is Abu Dhabi?
Abu Dhabi is in the Middle East. Abu Dhabi is the Capital of the United Arab Emirates, which consists of seven emirates, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al – Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm- Al Quwaim.
Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the most popular of the Seven Emirates due to Tourism and Social status. The other Emirates are beautiful and unique. I have traveled between all the Emirates and love each of them because they are different from each other.
The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is made up of three municipal regions
- Abu Dhabi central district
- Al ain- Eastern Region
